Eight tips for feeling safe when you go out running

Ever feel anxious when you go out jogging? You are not alone - more than two-thirds of 16 to 25-year-olds say they worry.

The reasons range from personal safety to the fear of injury.

The numbers come from England Athletics ahead of their launch of RunTogether, a campaign to get more people running.

Around a third of those surveyed had experienced harassment, which included people shouting at them and being beeped at by passing drivers.

Jenny O'Brien, from the campaign, says there's lots you can do to make sure you feel safe when running.

1) Plan your route

Make sure you know where you're running before you head out, choosing well-lit paths and areas you're familiar with.

This will also help you get the most out of your run.
2) Change your route

Have a few routes that you run so you are not always running the same course. This will also help stop you becoming bored with your run.
3) Wear reflective or high-vis gear and carry lights
This is especially important during dark mornings and evenings - especially if your run involves crossing roads.
4) Run with others, when you can

Running with friends is an obvious way you can feel more relaxed, especially in the dark. "Groups are perfect for anyone who is intimidated or self-conscious running by themselves," says Jenny.

Some are critical on this point, saying that women shouldn't be forced to modify their behaviour.

"In general advising women and girls to modify or restrict their behaviours is not an effective way to prevent violence," say Rape Crisis.

Organised runs also helping reduce the risk of injury as most are led by qualified coaches

"But fear and anxiety about male violence is a sad but completely understandable reality for the majority of women."

They add that if women prefer to run in groups that is clearly their right and "may have social and motivational benefits".

Organised runs also helping reduce the risk of injury as most are led by qualified coaches, meaning there's a structured warm up and cool down.
5) Let someone know where you are going and take your phone
Give yourself the peace of mind of knowing where you'll be and that you're easily contactable.
Jenny says it's always best to let someone know where you're going, so they would know where to look if you were taking longer than expected.
6) Use a tracker app, like Find My Friends

You can give a friend permission to see where you are on the map - again, for peace of mind. Equally if you twist an ankle they can see where exactly you are in the park, and get help to you.
7) Stay hydrated
Make sure you are well hydrated before you head out. For longer runs, it's a good idea to carry water with you.
8) And, yes, you can wear headphones
Most runners find listening to music or a podcast helps them stay motivated - and entertained for those laps of the park.

So-called "bone-conducting headphones" prevent accidents caused by traditional headphones and earbuds that block out sounds.
They mean runners can enjoy their music and still hear everything around them - including traffic, emergency vehicles and other warning noises.
